A Change of Season was recorded at the same time as the Awake album but then shelved as it was decided to not include it on that album. Fast forward a couple of years and the song was rerecorded and released as an EP with an additional four live tracks of covers..
Being the only original song on the EP and lasting 23 minutes, A Change of Seasons is actually split into 7 parts. The first is this one called The Crimson Sunrise. The chart itself contains some wonderful (!) time signature changes starting in 4/4, then switching into an alternating 4/4 & 3/4 and then some wonderful 7/8 & 5/8 grooves and fills. Finishing with some 5/16 and 2/16 fun, the whole piece isn’t as complicated as it first appears. Listen to the track multiple times and the drum parts make real sense in terms of what the guitars are doing.
Enjoy this little slice of Prog, and the next instalment will be with you when I’ve had time to sort it!
